Understand, triage, decide
Your manual already contains a maintenance schedule, and it rarely matches the list you're handed. Reading it once, with someone explaining what each item does, changes every future visit.
Symptoms are the second skill. A noise that appears when turning, when braking, or only when cold points in very different directions, and a short video with sound narrows it fast.
The rest is judgment about what to do yourself. Fluids, filters and tire care are reasonable. Brakes and airbags are not, and we would rather lose the sale than blur that line.
